Forest Management Walks: Starting Next Week!
- 12 April 2017
Teagasc in association with the Forest Service (DAFM) is organizing a nationwide series of forest walks starting next week. These walks focus on the management of young forests. Management objectives can be wide ranging: from timber production to biodiversity and recreation.
New forests require several years of active management to become well established. Ongoing maintenance is very important as the value of fully stocked sites at thinning stage cannot be understated.
A well-managed forest will give the best return and also becomes a place for you, your family and friends to enjoy.
Focus in the first few years will be on controlling the surrounding vegetation, ensuring that browsing animals won't damage the young trees, replanting of failed trees, assessing nutrient needs, shaping of broadleaf trees and reducing the risk of fires.
