As part of our Consumer Lifestyle Trends programme, Bord Bia and the Futures Company have teamed up to bring you a series of “Hot Topics” throughout 2016.

A hot topic is a deep dive look into some of the global forces that are at play and impacting businesses around the world such as urbanisation, changing demographics and the role of women.

The first in our Hot Topics series looks at 'The Future of Women' both as consumers and culture-shapers.

Women represent just under half of the global population and are the fastest growing group of consumers worldwide, yet analyses of their role in society are often one-dimensional and linear. However it is important to understand that women act as catalysts for fundamental changes, which are shaping not just their own world, but everybody’s world.

1 billion more women will be in the global workforce in twenty years’ time – this will have a massive impact on food & drink requirements.

As a food and drink business, can you answer the following:

1.Can you create products that reflect modern womanhood?

2.How can you communicate to both men and women in smart ways, avoiding alienating women and finding new identities for men as traditional gender roles are eroded?

3.Do you understand the new currency of aspiration for women? Do your products reflect these new aspirations?
