It has been a flourishing year for the floriculture industry. Royal FloraHolland traded a total of 12.5 billion products in 2016, an increase of 0.3%. The company has posted a turnover of €4.6 billion, up 3.8% from last year.

We are so excited to be offering such a rich variety of artistic activities this year in our celebration of Northern Ireland’s heritage. It is a privilege to host the up and coming young talent represented in the Brass Ensemble and in Sestina, alongside our evergreen Martello Jazz Band, as well as the unique experience of hosting the Sing for Life Choir which plays such an important role in the lives of many in our community affected by cancer.

Even though the 27th edition of the international trade show GrootGroenPlus, which will be held from 4-6 October 2017, is months away, all preparations are shifting gears. This is partly due to the many participants who already registered, and to the confirmation of international group visits. This shows that green professionals from all over the world know where to find the latest edition of this international trade fair.

We are delighted by the recent Government policy that land and buildings at plant nursery grounds should benefit from the agricultural exemption for business rates.
The NFU, with the backing of the HTA, its expert rating advisors Turner Morum LLP, and the Ornamental Horticulture Roundtable fought hard for this exemption to be reaffirmed allowing growers the security to invest in the future.

The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) has approved an application from the region of Hatay in Turkey to host a ‘B Class’ International Horticultural Exhibition in 2021. Expo 2021 Hatay was approved by AIPH on 23 January 2017.

These plant trials are a collaboration between 7 countries in Europe; Netherlands, Germany, France, Britain, Austria, Finland and Ireland. Antrim Castle Gardens will be bursting with colour from 5th - 7th May 2017 as Allianz Garden Show Ireland returns to the beautiful venue for a three-day festival of flowers, food, and fun.
With a renewed focus on gardens this year there will be more to entice and inspire every level of a gardener with a warm welcome being extended to Joe Swift from BBC Gardeners World, who will be sharing his extensive knowledge during a series of interesting talks on Friday 5th May.

European conference on Xylella fastidiosa: finding answers to a global problem | European Food Safety Authority
A major scientific conference on European research into Xylella fastidiosa is to be held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, from 13-15 November 2017. The conference is being organised jointly by EFSA, the University of the Balearic Islands, the Euphresco network for phytosanitary research coordination and funding, and the EU Horizon 2020 projects POnTE and XF-ACTORS.
