Gavin's €2.3m 'Sky Garden' to Get Stilts

CELEBRITY gardener Diarmuid Gavin's controversial 'Sky Garden' is expected to be mounted on stilts when it opens to the public next summer, writes Georgina O'Halloran.

The €2.3m garden, which was inspired by the movie 'Avatar' and which scooped gold at the Chelsea Flower Show in May, features an 82ft high, pod-shaped 'hanging' garden, suspended from a crane.

But when the garden is installed in Cork's Fitzgerald's Park in the summer, the garden will probably be built on stilts, according to a spokesman for Failte Ireland, which is funding the majority of the project.

It is hoped it will become one of Cork's top tourist attractions.

But controversy has surrounded the project, with some city councillors criticising the overall cost of the project.

Speaking yesterday, Workers' Party councillor Ted Tynan said the 'Sky Garden' project was not value for money and its cost was "ridiculous".
