Curating the City. The Changing Nature of Public Space

It's not easy to find a seat in the centre of Dublin. If you want to buy a coffee, there's plenty of choices. But if you fancy just sitting and dreaming or resting your legs while shopping, you'd better head for the boardwalk. Or at least be near a public park. Otherwise, there's not a seat in sight between Parnell Square and St Stephen's Green. It is hardly a pedestrian-friendly gesture, but the city council says there is a perception that benches attract people who don't move on, so they're not suitable street furniture.

          This garden (name TBC) is a water landscape with a dramatic tidal effect. This unique idea is aimed at capturing the essence of the wild Irish tidal landscape. The garden will be dramatically transformed in front of the spectators’ eyes by lowering the water level. Landmasses and islands will appear and form a new landscape and then they disappear again.

            Bloom 2017 Medium Garden - The Oxfam GOAL Garden - A World Beyond Walls

            The Oxfam GOAL garden is a vibrant, social space designed to highlight the need for tolerance and acceptance in a world that is becoming increasingly divided. The back wall of this garden represents what could, in a more inclusive and diverse global society, become of some of many border walls that are currently being talked about and constructed around the world today.

              Bloom 2017 Small Garden - Stem Cell

              In Ireland’s monastic tradition the ‘cell’ is seen as a retreat from the world and Hugh hopes that ‘Stem Cell’ can be viewed as a modern retreat with stems, i.e. plants. Here the walls of the ‘cell’ have been exploded and re-arranged to give a semi-enclosed space where screening is provided by both the walls and the embracing plants.
