Northern Ireland Forestry Sector Set for Development

A group of officials have met to discuss the development of the private forestry sector in Northern Ireland. President of the Ulster Farmers' Union Harry Sinclair was joined by managing director John Hetherington in Magherafelt this week to discuss issues regarding the industry, reports Farming Life.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Sinclair said the discussion had been extremely positive and informative - as the experts covered topics including tree felling licences, which are set to be introduced in April 2013, as well as the growing threat of imported diseases.

He explained: "There is scope to increase the levels of tree planting on almost every local farm, particularly in those areas that are not that well suited to production agriculture."

The expert also noted the importance of introducing measures to protect Northern Ireland from tree diseases by ensuring the highest possible plant health status.
