HortiTrends Weekly Comment & News Digest Jan 11th

Teagasc this week reached an important milestone for one if its targets in the '2030 Foresight Initiative' which identified a significant need to enhance the transfer of research knowledge to stakeholders to assist them to innovate and develop sustainable rural businesses. Introducing T-Stor - Teagasc's New Open Access Repository will give both researchers and those who utilise the research the most up-to date information from the wide variety of research undertaken in food, forestry and horticulture. As outlined in a recent article in TResearch - Forfás recently published a bibliometric study of the public research base in Ireland as part of an exercise mapping research strengths here. Of all the public research organisations measured over the 10-year period from 1998 to 2007, Teagasc had the highest number of scientific papers published. The vast majority of the 1,367 Teagasc papers are in agriculture and food science, demonstrating Teagasc's core strength.
With the continued success of Teagasc in a recent further round of government funded research grants, there will be even more detailed research being undertaken on behalf of the industry. It will be important for food, forestry and horticulture that the research continues to be business focused and industry led.
See what the next generation of potential researchers will be looking into in Snapshot of Students' Projects from the BT Young Scientist Exhibition. If you have never visited, you are missing out on the infectious enthusiasm that these young students have for the science and research they are carrying out in food, horticulture and forestry. Sometimes a problem and a solution is seen very differently through their eyes.
If all the chat about research is not getting you excited watch the buzzing video Everris, Innovative Solutions for Grass, Plants and Crops to Grow Greener, Stronger, Healthier. A more commercial take on the benefits of science and research but it also shows you that if 'a picture says a thousand words' then the using video to influence and connect with your customers is defiantly the way forward.
Its important to look after your own in hard times but for the French Horticulture Students Seeking Work Experience in Ireland they like the many Irish who will look further afield for experience and employment, will gain great life experience and ideas that will one day result in new ideas, research and eventually new businesses and jobs coming back to Ireland.
