- 30 January 2013

A second man has died after a wall collapsed inside a store in Longford town. He is said to be in his mid-60s and a customer at the DIY store. It is understood an internal wall over nine metres high collapsed in the Connacht Gold DIY and Garden Centre on the Athlone Road.
A 47-year-old customer who was struck by falling masonry was pronounced dead this afternoon. Four other men were injured and taken to the Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar. One man is being treated for serious injuries. The Health and Safety Authority has launched an investigation into the incident.
It is expected much of the focus of its inquiries will be on the role played by high winds and bad weather in the area this afternoon. Chief Executive of Connacht Gold Aaron Forde said: "The board, management and staff of Connacht Gold Co-op expresses deepest sympathy to the families. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.
"We express our sympathy and our support to the other visitors and employees who suffered injury as a result of the accident. "We are also providing counselling to those visitors and employees in the store who were affected by this accident." Mr Forde said safety is a primary concern and the company was cooperating with emergency services, gardaí and the HSA in establishing the cause of the accident.
Connacht Gold opened the store just over nine months ago.
