John Stanley's Practical Retail Solutions Newsletter - January 2013

If you felt 2012 was major year of change, then 2013 will be even greater. That will excite some of you and I suspect scare some of you. The trends coming through in retailing are coming rapidly at present and it is a challenge to keep up and also adapt a business to those changes

JSA, like your business, has to keep up and adapt to those changes. This month sees the launch of our Phone APP and a promotion on trends, but more about that later. To get you in the mood for change watch this video on the top 20 changes you can expect.

Clicks FOR Bricks

One of the challenges of 2013 for small business and retailers is keeping up with the consumer when it comes to "Clicks" marketing.

More and more consumers want to communicate online and the methods are changing by the day. Whether it is Phone Apps, Cash Mobs, Pinterest, QR codes or whatever...how do you cope?

At John Stanley Associates we are launching a new program to help you.

Watch this video and then each month we will take another topic, explore how it can help you and provide you with the tools for your business.

Who wants to be an Entrepreneur?

My first presentation of the year is in Nashville, Tennessee where I am presenting "Who wants to be an Entrepreneur". This is a brief summary of my presentation for those that cannot get there.

One thing is for sure, the independent retail and small business scene is changing rapidly. Imagine what the industry will look like in the next few years. The consumer will have changed their values and expectations on what they want from an independent local business and the entrepreneurs will have met those needs, but what are those needs and wants?

For some business owners this is a daunting time and they are not sure what to do and how to change their business in such a changing environment. They are often afraid to make a change unless it is the wrong change.

The entrepreneur loves this, they always have and always will. Times of change is when the entrepreneur flourishes, they can adapt to change in the new scene and take market share at the expense of others in the market place.

This is the era of the entrepreneur and it can be seen in all walks of life.

Our industry faces a "clicks and bricks" future, what worked in the past will not work in the future. Plus, it seems like every day a new trend or technology appears that we need to evaluate and ask ourselves it is relevant to our business and our consumers.

In the next few years

In the next few years amongst the many changes that will occur we will see the disappearance of the old cash register and the emergence of biometric payments, the bar code replaced by object recognition scanners and Clooeelook which will enable the consumer to get all the communications they need from an improved looking QR code.

Whilst many will tremble at the changes others will look forward to the opportunities.

This presentation by John Stanley, who was voted West Australian Entrepreneur of the Year in 2009, does not focus on the technology, but does focus on what we need to do as owners of businesses to ensure we maintain a position of leadership in our business and local community.

The presentation focuses around the 10 Common Traits of all Entrepreneurs in Business;

  • The way they think
  • The way they manage
  • The way they plan
  • Their business drivers
  • Why entrepreneurs have more than a job
  • The understanding of the market
  • Their understanding of the competition
  • Working "on" the business
  • Focus on technology
  • Knowing they never stop learning

John will illustrate this with examples from around the world where business entrepreneurs have developed winning formulae to make a difference in the community and the market place.
