Garden Centres Spread A Little Happiness & Promote Independents
- 25 April 2013
This Thursday, 25th April, independent garden centres across Ireland will leave their businesses & head out to surprise locations in their communities to give away 12,000 Irish grown plants, worth €50,000. The aim - To Spread a Little Happiness across the nation Twenty five garden centres (see note to editor for list) will take part in this initiative to cheer up the nation & rekindle a love of gardening.
To make the experience as accessible as possible, the giveaways will be given girls' names, based on the most popular Irish registered names in 2012. They will be called Emily, Katie, & Sophie. To ensure the greatest chances of growing success, members of the public are invited to join a community Facebook page, giving weekly care tips to help get the most from this free gift. "The weather this Spring has been atrocious" says Garden Centre Association of Ireland General Manager, Anne McKenna. "Key periods in the gardening calendar, St Patrick's Day, Mother's Day & Easter, all fell during March, a month of exceptionally bad weather.
Nurseries growing & supplying Irish plants to garden centres have been hit particularly hard & in organising an initiative of this magnitude, it was our objective to give them a helping hand." "For experienced & beginner gardeners alike, the last three years have been extremely challenging.
It is understandable that people have given up on veg patches & hanging baskets as they simply haven't performed". Independent garden centres want to do something about this & want to get people gardening again. "The stress reduction & health benefits of gardening are widely recognised, and who couldn't do with a little less stress in their lives right now" says Anne.
