HortiTrends Weekly Comment and News Digest - May 17th
- 17 May 2013
In Irish Plants for an Irish Climate - Paul Kirwan is passionate about Irish grown plants versus imported and he appeals to plant buyer's to support Irish Grower's. Niamh Tully also gives a good few reasons why they should.
We are running a competition for Bloom Ticket over on our sister site www.GardenGuide.ie Its for the public, so when you take of your work hat, have a look and see whats influencing your potential customers. How do we relax when we are not writing about horticulture? Listen to horticulture of course! The Sodshow Meets Margaret O’Farrell , Caítríona Redmond, Belle Norman and David Corscadden. We enquired of Peter Donegan, why there was no big 'Bloom Promo Show'? A frustrated Peter told us, "that there seems to be no appetite from the trade to promote their Bloom participation". Another case of 'Too Busy Doing, to do the Telling' we think. Never mind, as holding the fort on this weeks show will be Bloom Manager - Gary Graham. A great interview I am told.
In Keelings' Launch Their Love To Grow Garden at Bloom 2013 the ever busy Jane Mc Corkell is going for gold again. It could be medal number 6 if the Gods and judges are willing. Jane is also busy and getting busier (see tenders). Show gardens are a bit like social media, you have to stick at it to make it return dividends. We will be profiling all of the designers over the next 2 weeks and trying to figure out which ones are going to have Jane looking over her shoulder in the future including her ITB horticulture students who are recieving invaluable training from someone who is very active in the design trade, which includes the GLDA below.
The GLDA are offering another opportunity for up-skilling with the 'Planting Design and Planting Plans' Workshop with Patricia Tyrrell. Its an organisation we much admire for its volunteer ethos and as we always say, 'When the going gets tough, the tough get training.' It will help you to offer your customers a better service. On that note Knowledgeable Advice and Customer Trust are the Key to Sustained Sales: David Shortall MGLDA makes the argument that designing is very much about customer service.
Where HortiTrends leads the IFA follows and they too have come out to bemoan the lack of a Minister of State for Food and Horticulture in Appointment of Minister of State at Dept of Agriculture Overdue. It defies logic for a government who have put their bet on FoodHarvest 2020 being the answer to some of Ireland's woes.
We just couldn't finish the newsletter without a mention of Chelsea, so Rare Flower to have Own Security at Chelsea Flower Show is just one of the many Chelsea related articles that you will find below.
