Decision to Introduce Postcodes in September 2014 Welcomed

The decision by the government to issue a decision on final tenders for the introduction of postcodes in September has been welcomed by the e-commerce arm of Retail Excellence Ireland. The Department of Communications is to evaluate tenders for the new system in August with a decision expected in September. The postcode system will then be expected to be fully operational by September of next year.
Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte has previously said that a national postcode system is “vital part of the national infrastructure”. Ireland is one of the few countries in the world that does not have a postcode system with only Dublin having numerical codes such as Dublin 1 or Dublin 2. eTail Excellence Ireland said that the current lack of a postcode system poses difficulties for online retailers and estimates that 40 per cent of all addresses in Ireland are not unique, particular in rural areas.
“We would urge the minister to introduce a post code system that identifies a unique address as opposed to a block of addresses,” eTail chairman Geoff Scully said.
“This will prove hugely beneficial for eCommerce businesses, service providers and anyone delivering a parcel in the Republic of Ireland.”
