Teagasc 2020 Road Maps Launched

Teagasc 2020 Road Maps for each of the main agriculture and food enterprises were launched by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD at the ploughing championships in Laois, today, Wednesday 25 September.

The Teagasc 2020 Road Maps to better farming outline the direction for the different sectors, the anticipated size and shape of each sector in the future, the challenges to be overcome and the opportunities to be grasped. The main policy and market issues to be addressed by all involved are also highlighted.

The 9 Road Maps cover dairying, suckler beef, pigs, sheep, tillage, forestry, horticulture, environment and food. Technical efficiency targets for farm enterprise are set so farmers can benchmark their performance against the top performers.

Dr Tom Kelly, Director of Knowledge Transfer in Teagasc said: “These Road Maps reflect the targets set in the government’s Food Harvest 2020 report which outlined ambitious growth targets for Irish agriculture. The Teagasc Road Maps outline the direction each sector is expected to take, and the technical performance levels that can be achieved at farm level. The actions required in research, advisory and education are also outlined to assist the sectors develop over the next seven years.”
