The best IPM plant innovations have been decided: For the tenth time, innovative breeds were honored in six categories with the Innovation Showcase. In total, 35 exhibitors submitted 61 innovations. Appropriately for the anniversary, the jury thought that one innovation was worthy of a Special Prize.

Bedding and Balcony Plants category

The Pelargonium zonale 'Brocade Fire Night' presented by Dümmen Orange from Rheinberg has been distinguished as the "IPM Innovation 2017" in the "Bedding and Balcony Plant" category - a graceful ornamental foliage plant with enchanting unfilled red-orange flowers. The number of flowers is impressive and is particularly characteristic of this geranium variety. It is easy-care since the flowers hardly sprinkle and have compact and well-branching growth. That makes it interesting for consumers and producers alike. The 'Brocade Fire Night" flowers throughout the summer and is thus suitable as a solitaire in a tub and in combination with others in a balcony box or in a bed. With its retro style, it exactly corresponds to the zeitgeist and is thus an interesting product precisely for young consumers, too.

Tub Plants category

The Mandevilla sanderi (Hemsl.) Woodson 'Mini Scarlet' presented by MNP flowers from the Netherlands is receiving the "IPM Innovation 2017" title in the "Tub Plants" category. It is supplementing the Mandevilla range with an absolutely special type. Its tenderness is reminiscent of gloriosas, particularly due to the narrow shape of its flowers. The many flowers show themselves in a totally open form, have a radiant long-distance effect and blossom continuously. The delicate character extends the area of utilization. The mini type is very suitable for a small balcony but is just as appealing on a spacious terrace.

Flowering House Plants category

The Hibiscus rosa sinensis 'Petit™Orange' presented by Graff Breeding from Denmark is receiving the "IPM Innovation 2017" mark of distinction in the "Flowering House Plant" category. Its two-coloured, only medium-sized and narrow flowers in bright orange are particularly characteristic of this hibiscus. The abundance of flowers and buds makes the plants a particular gem. The structure is naturally compact and the foliage dark and shiny. The self-cleaning effect and the long lifetime are particularly consumer-friendly. An interesting supplement to the range not only as a flowering houseplant but also for tubs outdoors.

Cut Flowers category

An alstroemeria presented by Könst Alstroemeria from the Netherlands, i.e. the 'White Pearls', is once again being distinguished as the "IPM Innovation" in the "Cut Flowers" category - a noble product, precisely the right thing for a modern interior. It is characterized by the particular abundance of flowers. No matter whether as an individual flower stem or in a bouquet, the abundance of white flowers of the 'White Pearls' catches the eye directly and thus makes it interesting for florists and flower lovers. It's sterile flowers extend the vase life and the consumer is pleased with the durability of three to four weeks.

Woody Plants category

The Expert Commission decided in favor of the Picea abies 'Little Santa' presented by Baumschule Artmeyer from Hörstel as the "IPM Innovation 2017" in the "Woody Plants" category. Here, a good marketing idea was implemented perfectly. The trend towards a second tree is receiving new nourishment with 'Little Santa' and is fulfilling the consumers' wishes for small, compact Christmas trees. It has a good structure which is so stable that even the smallest tree can still be well-decorated without the branches sagging. That makes it the peculiarity in the range. Anybody who still has fun with a spruce in the summer, too, will certainly find a good use on the terrace or in the garden.

Shrubs category

The jury has distinguished the Helleborus Gold Collection ®Ice N‘Roses® (Helleborus x glandorfii) presented by Heuger Gartenbaubetriebe from Glandorf as the "IPM Innovation 2017" in the "Shrubs" category. The large representative flowers, the reliable flower base, and the early flowering characterize this helleborus and thus unite the good properties of Christmas roses, lenten roses and black hellebores which it has not been possible to unite until now: early flowering, colorful flowers, and robust character. A particular breeding achievement which was distinguished by the jury. For the consumer and the producer, an uncomplicated product which extends the range in a special way.

Special Prize of the Jury

This year, too, the jury thought than one innovation was worthy of a Special Prize: The Rosa polyantha 'Smeralda Green Show' presented by Twelve Energy Societa Agricola SRL from Italy is emerging as the Special Prize winner this year. A highlight for every florist: It has absolutely nothing to do with a normal rose. Just a few leaves are located at the tips of its long, spiral, green stems. No matter whether as an individual presentation or processed in floral workpieces, it will always be a special eye-catcher. Furthermore, the proud owner of this cut flower can be pleased with its particularly long durability.

All the plants which have taken part in the "IPM Innovation 2017" competition are being exhibited in the "Innovation Showcase" of the Central Horticultural Association (ZVG) in Hall 1A. Throughout the period of the fair, the visitors can obtain information about the latest innovations and trends in the plant market. This year, a survey of the visitors is being conducted for the first time. The results will be announced on the last day of the fair.
