Save the Bees

Please add your voice and do the same: 

Dear Minister Coveney, Dear Ambassador Montgomery,

This is to express my deepest disappointment that on 15th March 2013 you did not support the EU ban on nerve-agent pesticides (neonicotinoids). Bees play such an important role to the planet's survival and I urge you to make it priority to maximise their chance to survive by supporting a ban on neonicotinoids.

In addition to the honeybee, Ireland has 20 species of bumblebee, 80 species solitary bee, all of whom contribute to maintaining an effective Irish pollination service. This service comes to us for free.

In Ireland Bees are responsible for 80% of all pollination, worth a minimun of €85 million per annum to the Irish economy. One third of Ireland's 102 native bee species are now threatened with extinction.*

All around the world, bee colonies are dwindling thanks to a phenomenon scientists call Colony Collapse Disorder. In the USA, appalled by the EPA's apparent disinterest in protecting both the bees and food supply, four beekeepers and five environmental and consumer groups filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court against the agency for its failure to protect pollinators from dangerous pesticides.

Poisoined bees will get their day in court.

Will it come to this where we must take you and our own Irish Government to court in order to protect all our futures and our children's futures?

I will follow the vote on the 29th of April with great interest, as I believe that Ireland must support the ban on neonicotinoids as this will lead to a more sustainable agriculture where bees have a greater chance to survive. I hope to be able to congratulate you in the near future!
