UK Students were Arb Enough – Are You?
- 27 May 2013
The first 2013 3ATC-College Climbing Competition attracted 35 student climbers from 6 colleges. Sponsored by STEIN SAFETY, the event at Sparsholt College attracted teams from Merrist Wood, Sparsholt, Plumpton, Chichester, Myerscough and Kirby Hall colleges. Every student climber was presented with a goody bag of stash worth over £60 by STEIN – seems a good deal for a £10 entry fee!
Each team has three climbers and their final climb times are accumulated to give a joint time in seconds. In third position at this event was Plumpton College A Team - Dan Smith, Phillip Veal and Will Heath - with a joint time of 960 seconds. Second place was Sparsholt College C Team – Ollie Wall, Connor Moore and Jake Gaunt – in 847 seconds and in first place this year’s Southern CCC winners were Merrist Wood A Team – Josh Read, Sam Chamberlain and Louis Medley – with a combined climb time of 763 seconds. Merrist Wood College won a gift voucher worth £1200 to spend with STEIN SAFETY and the winning team members will each receive gift voucher worth £200 from STEIN SAFETY. In addition, the Arboricultural Association presented the winning students with membership of the Association for the rest of the year and copies of the AA’s Tree Pests and Diseases – An Arborists’ Guide and Fungi on Trees – An Arborists’ Guide.
The next 3ATC-CCC is the Northern event hosted at Myerscough College, Preston, on 14–15 May. If you haven’t entered a team yet, please book them in at 3atc.trees.org.uk we were close to our maximum number of climbers at the Southern event and would ask colleges to bring a maximum of two teams each to the Northern competition. To make it fair, all climbers must have under two years’ climbing experience to participate.
