Landscape Students Commence Work at Malahide Botanic Gardens

First-year landscape design diploma students from Senior College Dun Laoghaire today commenced a pilot programme, which will see them undertake studies at Malahide Botanic Gardens. The pilot programme was devised by course tutor, Barry Lupton, the Parks Department of Fingal County Council and Shannon Heritage. Over the coming year, students can look forward to undertaking a wide variety of practical horticultural and design related activities. Commenting on the new programme, Barry said, “The landscape programme in Senior College has been running for thirteen years. Over this time, it has grown and responded with the design sector and helped to start the careers of landscape architects that are now employed across the globe. The new programme will address industry demands for design professionals to have stronger horticulture skills and it complements our existing practical construction activities.”

Malahide Castle and Gardens have a rich history steeped in horticultural practices. Recently the castle grounds underwent €16 million development and surrounding gardens continue to be developed by Fingal County Council and under the expert eye of Head Gardener, Barbara Cunningham. “The pilot represents a great opportunity for the garden and the students. There are lots of projects we’d like get underway and there is huge potential for student participation. It’s not often that students get a chance to have input into a garden of such importance. We’re all excited about it,” explained Barbara.

SCD offers a two-year Higher National Diploma in Landscape Design, which is accredited by BTEC. Successful graduates can avail of formal progression links to year three of a number of EFLA accredited Landscape Architecture programs. Applications to this course can be made any time up to course commencement but applicants are encouraged to apply early to avoid disappointment.
