At the test nursery of Ecke Europe in Denmark, a new ground‐breaking poinsettia variety has just been tested which does not require pinching. A new group of varieties with this feature will be added to the assortment of Ecke. "The plants practically look after themselves during the growth phase – they just need watering and shade. That means that the grower can save labour costs in this area and apply those resources more appropriately elsewhere in the business," says Charlotte Weiss, Ecke's Sales and Logistics Manager for Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands. In addition to this revolutionary new product, the company is also working intensively with varieties that can tolerate being cultivated at lower temperatures.

In addition to the test nursery in Odense, the company also operates another test nursery in Spain, which makes it possible to test new varieties under very different conditions of climate and light. Because product development is not just about colour, form and durability; it also requires knowledge of climate, finances and production conditions – and this is knowledge that the two test greenhouses help to generate.

In co‐operation with the producer, account is taken of resource situation and capacity, so that the work can be focused on reducing costs for the grower on several fronts. Accordingly, prior dialogue with the customer is of great importance. "It's a must for us to find solutions that will save the grower unnecessary costs and time‐consuming work.
