Dublin City Council Action Plan to Tackle Invasive Species Costing Economy €2M a Year

A city council has introduced proposals for tackling invasive alien animals and plants, which are estimated to cost the economy over €2m a year.

Dublin City Council claims it is the first local authority in Ireland to produce an invasive alien species action plan.

Teagasc New Part-Time Horticulture Courses

The Teagasc College of Amenity Horticulture at the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin has announced a series of new part-time / work-based courses for the horticulture sector. Three new QQI Level 6 component awards will be offered in Ecology and the Environment, Garden centre operations and Tree and Shrub management.

EU Concerns Over Rubber in Artificial Pitches

 

EU considering health issues of rubber in artificial pitches. Rubber infill, used widely in the construction of synthetic turf pitches throughout Ireland, is being considered by the EU as a product that should fall under legislation. Claims that the rubber contains toxic material and may cause cancer have made the safety of the pitches one of the most volatile issues in sport.

Closing Date for Teagasc College Applications

Friday, 27th May is the closing date for applications to QQI accredited level 5 courses at Teagasc agricultural and horticultural colleges. Application forms can be downloaded from the Teagasc website at http://www.teagasc.ie/training/forms/ .  Alternatively application forms can be obtained directly from the agricultural and horticultural colleges.

The Grand Final is to be held at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin on May 7th where we will see some of the brightest young talent in the horticultural profession competing for the prestigious title of CIH Young Horticulturist of the Year 2016. The winner will receive the £2500 Travel Bursary provided by the Percy Thrower Trust and will be able to use it to further their horticultural career anywhere in the world.
