Rising Stars at Chelsea Flower Show

With under a week to go, Westland Horticulture and the Rising Stars Programme are getting ready to exhibit at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
A total of 3 Rising Stars will be taking part and have created a specially planted container to exhibit, which will be seen by members of the public, journalists and perhaps even royalty!

College Horticulture team blossom at Garden Show and win Best Overall and Best Design

It was a smashing start to the weekend as garden designers from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) were named ‘Best Design’ AND ‘Best Overall’ in the Team Garden Challenge competition at this year’s Allianz Garden Show Ireland held at Antrim Castle Gardens.

This conceptual rose garden investigates how we perceive and engage with the use of color in a garden. It will feature a sculptural kaleidoscope at its heart, a portal from which to investigate the vibrant arrangement of plant colors and complementary pigments of Cuprinol paints displayed throughout the garden, which together creates a playful and surreal visual experience for the visitor.

In Ireland’s monastic tradition the ‘cell’ is seen as a retreat from the world and Hugh hopes that ‘Stem Cell’ can be viewed as a modern retreat with stems, i.e. plants. Here the walls of the ‘cell’ have been exploded and re-arranged to give a semi-enclosed space where screening is provided by both the walls and the embracing plants.

Statement on behalf of the Minister for Agriculture Food & Marine, Michael Creed TD on recent Gorse Fires

Minister for Agriculture Food & Marine, Michael Creed TD and Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD wish to remind landowners and the public that it is an offence under Section 40 of the Wildlife Act, 1976 (amended by Section 46 of the Wildlife Act, 2000) to burn, from 1st March to 31st August in any year, any vegetation growing on any land not then cultivated. Individuals who are found to burn vegetation within that prohibited period are liable to prosecution by An Garda Síochána or by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
