EU Research Group Meet to Discuss Management Tools for Food SMEs

Teagasc are key partners of a leading pan-European research group called NetGrow, that will develop new strategic management tools to assist food SMEs and agencies that support their activities, to become more innovative. Teagasc hosted a 3-day meeting in Dublin this week to review the current stage of the research and to take some key steps to translate the research findings into practical tools that can be used by SMEs and support agencies.

Organic Trust 2012 AGM & Conference Resounding Success!

The 2012 AGM & Conference of the Organic Trust which was held in the peaceful surroundings of the Camphill Community Organic Farm at Grangebeg, Dunlavin, Co Kildare, saw record attendance levels. The excellent facilities provided in 'Colmcille' – the Grangebeg Community Hall – provided the perfect surroundings to conduct AGM official business early in the day.

Tipperary Family Business Wins Overall National Organic Award 2012

The Best Overall Organic Product at today’s National Organic Awards 2012 was awarded to Crowe’s Farm for its Organic Dry Cure Back Rasher product, which was chosen for its high quality, superior taste and smart packaging. The prize was presented by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for Food, Horticulture & Food Safety Shane McEntee TD, who also announced the winners at the awards ceremony in Bord Bia.

GM Trials Not at Odds with Organic Production

Organic producers in Ireland have been told that the recent trials of GM potatoes in the country are not at odds with organic growing. "Knowledge is the only armour we have against a world of uncertainty," Teagasc director Gerry Boyle told 150 organic farmers and growers at the National Organic Conference in Tullamore, Co Offaly.

Consumer Continue To Buy Organic Food Despite What The Scientists Say

Consumers continue to purchase organic food despite attempts by science to discredit it. The latest study coming from the US concludes that organic food is not “healthier” than non organic food. The study illustrates the point that science finds it almost impossible to highlight one method of food production as being better for human health than another.

The Proper Cider made by Cuffesgrange’s Highbank Orchards has been highly commended in the Best Organic Alcohol and Non-Alcoholic Beverage category of Bord Bia’s National Organic Awards 2012. This year was the sixth year of the National Organic Awards, which take place during National Organic Week each year. Over 100 entries were received and awards were given in eight categories.

Crowe’s Take Overall Award as IOFGA Members Do Exceptionally Well at National Organic Awards

The National Organic Awards were presented on Thursday Septemeber 13th at Bord Bia headquaters in Dublin. The Crowe brothers from Crowe’s farm in Dundrum, Co Tipperary took the overall best organic product as well as winning best fresh meat category for their back rashers.

The Minister of State said he hoped that the inaugural meeting of Organic Fo-cus marked the start of a new phase in the development of the sector. The group is made up of representatives of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Teagasc and Bord Bia as well as stakeholders from across the spectrum of the organic sector including meat, dairy, poultry, horticulture, cereals and aquaculture.
