Job Description

The intern will gain practical experience in the implementation of European legislation in a national context.Effects of nitrates on water quality, and the status of water quality in Ireland. Data and map preparations. Environmental data management. How environmental data can be displayed via the Web. The Intern will receive formal/informal training in the following Use of GIS software and WebGIS tools from a basic to moderate user point of view. Structure and operation of GIS databases. On completion the Intern will have attained skills in completing formal written reports; collecting data from various sources and authors. Preparation of raw data to produce statistics and trends for reports. Creation of maps and use of ArcGIS software. Use of WebGIS from an environmental perspective.

Skills Requirements

Environmental science or engineering graduate looking for practical experience in working with environmental data, including some GIS training or GIS/Geography graduate who wants to gain practical experience in working with data. Excellent communication skills; the project involves contacting domain experts in water quality by phone and email, must have an excellent standard of communication by both means. Must have a high standard of English and be good at written communication.

Please Note:

This is an Internship. An allowance of ?50 per week will be paid in addition to your current Social Welfare payment.See eligibility criteria above.

Education Requirements:

Third Level - This is at minimum a graduate position for a BSc or B.Eng., or a BA with Geography. If the candidate has completed a Masters of some kind that has involved a strong written element such as a research masters, they may be better suited to this internship.
