YFCU Members Explore Floristry
- 28 May 2013
The Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster (YFCU) recently held a workshop for female YFCU members entitled Growing Inspiration in conjunction with CAFRE and hosted at their Greenmount Campus. This workshop introduced members to business opportunities in horticulture and floristry in Northern Ireland and showcased the training opportunities offered at Greenmount.
Caroline Mathers, CAFRE’s horticulture and floristry programme manager welcomed YFCU members along and gave a short presentation on Inspiration for a Growing Business. She then explained the growing systems for flower crops with commercial potential. Designing with flowers was the last theory presentation which looked at adding value to crops.
Speaking after the event, Roberta Simmons, YFCU vice president, said: “This was a great opportunity for members to find out about flower production systems and in particular we learnt about crops known to have commercial potential such as lilies, callas and stock. We also got the chance to do some practical work with these crops and created our very own design to take home.
“We would like to pass on our thanks and gratitude to all the staff at CAFRE Greenmount who delivered a comprehensive and informative evening and one that may inspire our members to take up floristry as a career option.”
