Dutch Agri- and Horticulture Benefitted from the Extension of the EU

Since 10 Central and Eastern European countries joined to European Union in 2004, the Dutch trade in the agrarian products with these countries has quadrupled. The value of the export to Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus and Malta was still around 1 billion Euro in 2003. This has increased to 4 billion in 2011. At the same time the Dutch import from these new members grew from 500 million to 2 billion Euro.

CSO publishes Environmental Indicators Report 2012

The CSO has published an Environmental Indicators Report 2012. Forestry Statistics are included in Domain 4 Land Use under the following headings: 4.1 Ireland: Land use categories 1990-2009; 4.2 Ireland: Forest cover 1980-2010; 4.3 EU: Forest cover 2010; 4.4 Ireland: Planting period in public forestry 1920-2010; 4.5 Ireland: Public forest 2004-2010.

Employers to Fund Sick Pay?

There continues to be a row over whether or not employers should pay for the rst four weeks of the employee’s sick leave. Social Protection Minister Joan Burton, who is under pressure from both the Department of Public Expenditure and the Troika to cut the €1 billion annual sick leave bill, rst muted this proposal in advance of the December 2011 budget, with strong opposition from employers, including the Irish Hardware & Building Materials Association.

National Organic Week

National Organic Week to run September 10th - 16th

National Organic Week has been held annually since 2005. It is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and co-ordinated by Bord Bia on behalf of Organic Focus. National Organic Week 2012 aims to continue to raise consumer awareness of the benefits of organic produce and increase the frequency of consumption of locally produced organic food.

Protest Over GM Potatoes Grows

Ireland's environmental protection agency has approved the first trial of a genetically modified potato crop. Scientists say the plants have been designed to improve resistance to blight. They argue that the type of genetic modification used is akin to conventional breeding.

Dutch Company Growing Strawberries in Iceland

A Dutch plant company has started growing strawberries in a greenhouse in Reykholt, west Iceland. The plan is to grow strawberries year-round. According to the manager of Jarðaberjalands (Strawberryland), Astrid Frederike Kooji, the first berries are expected to be ready for harvesting after two weeks, visir.is reports.
