Ireland's Renewable Energy Use Needs To More Than Double - SEAI

Launching a proposed new guide to help local authorities expedite renewable energy developments, the Chief Executive of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), Dr Brian Motherway said that if Ireland is to meet its binding targets to year 2020, cut €1 billion in annual fossil fuel imports, save over 8 million tonnes of CO2 emissions and support 13,000 jobs in the process, we need to more than double our use of renewable energy over the next 8 years.

300 Staff at Fruit Firm Get 2pc Pay Rise after Tesco Deal

MORE than 300 warehouse workers are set for a 2pc pay rise after staff at Tesco won the same increase. The Labour Court has recommended that staff at Keelings Distribution accept the wage offer made by their employer to mirror a pay hike at their main customer, Tesco. It said the company should also make a special once-off payment of €350 to each worker, if they accepted the court's findings. In addition, the court recommended the introduction of an incentive scheme for staff which could further boost their earnings, similar to a scheme at Tesco.

World Horticultural Expo Sells 1,174,623 Tickets

Exactly in the middle of the Floriade 2012 the organisation mentioned that 1,174,623 tickets have been sold already. Ad Berends mentioned on twitter that during the first half of the Floriade 609,512 visitors visited the House of Taste.

Dutch Export Agricultural Sector Growing, But Income Decreases Considerably

The export value of agricultural and horticultural products increased by 9% in 2011. The income in the agricultural sector decreased considerably. The number of agricultural companies decreased to slightly in excess of 70,000. The environment tax of the agricultural sector shows a different picture and a larger part of the income is spent on food.

It might not be one that affects constituencies up and down the country, but it is one that was brought to my attention in the recent past by a number of nursery and garden centre owners, namely, the need for the establishment of a national horticultural strategy to drive the potential of the sector.

Bees and other pollinating insects will benefit from a new guide produced by the RHS. Following last year’s list of pollinator-friendly cultivated plants, the charity is launching a list of wildflowers useful as nectar or pollen sources for insects. UK Home Grown Fruit and Veg in Danger

Poor supply chain practices are devaluing the fruit and vegetable industry according to the findings of a recent study. The National Farmer's Union's (NFU) Catalyst for Change report says that tomatoes, cucumbers and spring onions were being threatened by the decline in Britain's self sufficiency in relation to certain crop types.

The retail market in Ireland is the most important market for sales of fresh produce. The retail market for fresh produce was valued at €1.203 billion in 2007 which was a 5.4% growth compared with 2006. This market is made up of sales of fruit (45.4%), salad vegetables (14.2%), vegetables (23.6%) and potatoes (16.7%).

EU Organic Logo Fully Up and Running

From the 1st July 2012, the EU organic logo will be obligatory on all pre-packaged organic food products produced in EU Member States which meet the necessary standards. The logo will stay optional for non-packed and imported organic products. Other private, regional or national logos will continue to be allowed to appear alongside the EU label.
