Ciaran O’Connor Appointed State Architect

The Government has appointed Ciaran O’Connor, FRIAI, as the new State Architect/ Principal Architect in the Office of Public Works. O’Connor succeeds Patrick Cooney, who retired from this role in February 2012. A graduate of Dublin Institute of Technology and a Fellow of the RIAI, Ciaran worked in Germany and Canada prior to joining the Office of Public Works.

Ciaran's previous position was Assistant Principal Architect with responsibilities for a wide variety of new-build, conservation and landscape projects. He is presently completing the government’s Green Public Procurement document for Construction. While working in OPW, he has received numerous Architectural, Conservation and Landscape awards including the RIAI Triennial Medal for Restoration 2001, the prestigious Europa Nostra Medal in 1997 and the European Award for Cultural Heritage in 2007. Notable recent projects include the Marine Institute, Galway Civic Museum, the State Laboratory Campus, new build and conversation works in the National Botanic Gardens and new Garda Stations including in Irishtown and Finglas. He is also co-author of a number of booksand has contributed to Irish and international publications. He is an occasional third level visiting lecturer and critic at home and abroad.
