Teagasc and FACCE JPI Debate Feeding the World

Teagasc, the agriculture and food development authority in Ireland, and the EU Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE – JPI), have jointly arranged a scientific session - "The Great Debate on the Battle to Feed a Changing Planet."

The session forms part of the ESOF 2012 scientific programme and is scheduled to be held at The Convention Centre in Dublin, Ireland. It will be held between 13.30 and 15.00 hours GMT, on 13 July, 2012.

The scientific session will debate on how to accomplish global food security while simultaneously fighting the effects of producing food on climate change. By 2050, greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be reduced by 50%. During the same period, the demand for food is estimated to increase by 70%. Addressing this issue will require policy makers, consumers and producers to take some difficult decisions.

The speakers will include the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Professor Rajendra K. Pachauri, and the Chair of FACCE-JPI GB and President & CEO of INRA, Mrs Marion Guillou. The debate will be moderated by Leo Enright, a broadcaster. The panel will discuss the following topics:

  • Will we starve or will we burn? Can the world grow food at affordable prices and deal with climate change?
  • Plough our own furrow? Can Europe go it alone on climate change if others won’t follow?
  • Cool Food? Can consumer choices make a difference?

The media, live audience, delegates and the public outside the auditorium will be able to participate in the discussion through Twitter.
