Teagasc Appoint Head of its Crops, Environment and Land Use Programme

Teagasc has appointed Paddy Browne as head of its Crops, Environment and Land Use programme. The appointment was made by the Teagasc Authority at its meeting recently. He takes over from Dr Noel Culleton who has retired after a long and successful career.

He will be responsible for crops research in Oak Park, environment research in Johnstown castle along with the forestry and horticulture units in Teagasc.

A native of Tullow, County Carlow, Paddy Browne was Head of Education in Teagasc. Paddy started his career as an Adviser and Education Officer with Teagasc. In 1994 he was appointed Chief Tillage Adviser based in Oak Park. In 2001, he was appointed Head of Education in Teagasc.

He is a graduate of University College Dublin with a BAgrSc, went on to receive a MAgrSc (Hons). In 1987 he was awarded a Diploma in Adult and Community Education by the NUI (Maynooth). In 2000 he was awarded a Masters in Business Administration from WIT.

He has served as chairman of the Governing Body of Institute of Technology Carlow. He is also a former Council member of FETAC.

Teagasc Director Professor Gerry Boyle congratulated Paddy Browne on his appointment saying: “the Crops, Environment and Land Use Programme is an important programme in Teagasc. The environmental programme focused on water, soils, greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity is central to the sustainable development and growth of the Irish agricultural sector. It reaches across all the main farming enterprises in Ireland.  Our advisory and research work in tillage crops, horticulture and forestry underpins those sectors, assisting those involved to improve yields and improve efficiency.”
