Origin Green members win big at annual Green Awards

Andy

Three verified Origin Green members, namely Flahavan’s, Dairygold and Castletownbere Fisherman’s Co-operative Society, took home a total of six awards at the annual Green Awards this past week. Now in its eighth year, the Green Awards are a prestigious awards event recognizing excellence in green practice across Ireland’s business community. The food and drink industry has a history of success at this event and this trend continued at the 2017 awards, with one company scooping the overall top prize of ‘Green Business of the Year’.

Flahavan’s based in Waterford took home three awards on the night, including the ‘Green Medium Sized Organisation of the Year’, ‘The Green Food & Beverage Award’, and the ‘The Sustainable Energy Achievement Award’. Dairygold Co-Operative Society based in Mitchelstown, Cork took home ‘The Sustainable Supply Chain Achievement Award’, continuing their success from 2016 where they scooped two prizes.

Castletownbere Fisherman’s Co-operative Society took home two awards, including the Bord Iascaigh Mhara sponsored ‘Green Seafood Business of the Year Award’, as well as winning the top prize on the night, the overall ‘Green Business of the Year’. Founded in 1968 by a group of fishermen with the initial aim of purchasing fuel in bulk; the Co-op has evolved and expanded to become a highly profitable business with a turnover of €60 million last year.

Reflecting on their success, Donal O’Sulllivan, Assistant Manager of the Co-operative stated; ‘As a business that is wholly owned by fishermen, we are absolutely delighted and honored to have won these awards. After over 40 years trading fish, we are keenly aware of our responsibility to our local environment and our fishing resource’.

This marks the second time in three years that a seafood company has scooped the top prize, with Donegal based Island Seafoods winning big in 2015.
